Background

Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) is emerging as the communications standard for future Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and hence will be the foundation upon which these future ITS systems will be built.

DSRC-based ITS is being adopted around the world as a means to:

  • Save lives lost to traffic accidents
  • Reduce the economic impacts of traffic accidents and congestion
  • Reduce the global warming impact of congestion.

In Australia

  • The total social cost of congestion in Australia in 2005 was $9.39 B and is set to double by 2020, if nothing is done
  • The estimated cost of road fatalities in Australia (medical expenses, loss of work time, etc) is approx $10B p.a., with 1600 fatalities per year
  • Congestion accounts for 17% of all transport greenhouse gas emissions
  • Fuel consumption per vehicle under congested conditions is approx twice that experienced under free-flow conditions

In the USA the Vehicle Safety Communications Consortium (VSCC) of the Collision Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP), which consists of seven OEMs: BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GM, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen has produced a brief video descibing DSRC and some of its applications. They have kindly allowed us to post it here.
